Councils have the power to compile a list of buildings within the borough which are ‘locally listed’. This is distinct from the national register of listed buildings and generally is the next tier down in terms of the building’s historic or architectural merit. Nonetheless it is a means by which further protection can be given to valuable buildings within the Conservation Area. The classification is somewhat broader than that for the National Register since buildings since buildings whose use or history is considered to be a contribution to the character of the area can be included.
The closing date for nominations to the register is January 22nd 2013 and the Bloomsbury Conservation area Advisory Committee has been actively combing the Conservation Area for suitable buildings.
